A Little Background

MoBay City Run, a 10K/5K Run and Walk, was established specifically to raise funds to support struggling university students, hungry to fulfill their dreams and aspirations of attaining tertiary level education.
One of the stipulations is that beneficiaries must reside in Western Jamaica. This is MoBay City Run’s way of helping to sustain the institutions based in the west. The recipients are chosen from the University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus, UTECH Jamaica Western Campus, Montego Bay Community College and Sam Sharpe Teachers College.
Silvera first partnered with the UWI Western Jamaica Campus (WJC) four years ago and admits she could not have made it this far without the commitment and support of the management and staff at the renowned tertiary institution.
Like the founder, the UWI WJC was as mindful of the high cost of education and the challenges that students faced in meeting this cost.
“Education is a diverse product given the options that are available from the many institutions within western Jamaica, but the product is not fully accessible by the vast majority of qualified individuals because of the inability to pay,” Silvera states.
A graduate of UWI WJC herself, along with former Principal, Dr Luz Longsworth, acting Principal, Patrick Prendergast and senior administrator, Inderia Adjudah, they led the drive to improve accessibility for many students, by putting in place a strategic option that alleviated some of the financial burden associated with the high cost of education in Jamaica.
